Sedatives (through FR. Sédatif from lat. Sedatio “sedation”) or psycholeptics are a chemically heterogeneous group of medicinal substances of plant or synthetic origin that calm or reduce emotional stress without a hypnotic effect (at the same time facilitate the onset of natural sleep and deepen it) .
Compared with modern tranquilizers , especially benzodiazepines , sedatives have a less pronounced calming and antiphobic effect, without causing muscle relaxation and ataxia . However, good tolerance and the absence of serious side effects make it possible to use them in everyday outpatient practice, especially in the treatment of elderly and senile patients.
Most often, herbal remedies are used as sedatives: preparations of valerian , motherwort , mint . Widely used bromides .
In addition, some sleeping pills in small doses, such as barbiturates , are used as sedatives. Long-term use of sleeping pills as sedatives is not recommended.
