According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 1,194.975 km 2 , of which 1,185.833 km 2 are land and 3,540 km 2, or 0.770%, are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 265,559 residents of 100,743 households and 66,792 families live in the okrug. The population density is 224.00 people per km 2 . There are 107 013 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 90.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 82.36%, African - Americans - 11.46%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.35%, Asians - 1.34%, Hawaiians - 0.05%, representatives of other races - 2.48 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.97%. Hispanics made up 4.73% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 32.00% are children under the age of 18, 50.00% of households are married couples living together, 12.40% of households are single women without a spouse, and 33.70% of households households are not related to families , 27.90% of households consist of one person, 10.70% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.07.
