The Trinil tiger ( Latin Panthera tigris trinilensis ) is an ancient fossil subspecies of the tiger , which already had the typical dental characteristics of modern tigers and a deeper lower jaw. Inhabited 1.66 million years ago in Indonesia, and possibly could be the ancestor of all the famous Indonesian subspecies.

Habitat and habitatThis subspecies in the time interval 1.66 million years ago lived on the island of Java : Sangiran, Punung. Then, between 1.3-0.7 million years ago, its range included Java: Sangiran, Kendeng, Trinil, Kedung Brubus, Bangla, Jeruk, Kebon-Duren, Teguan; Sumatru Island : Padang.
DescriptionThis subspecies had comparatively large sizes and very large (as in the Indian and Amur subspecies ) teeth: P4 is narrower than M1 and the occipital part of the skull is as large as the Javanese tiger ( P. t. Sondaica ).
The ulna is longer and more massive than the Sumatran and Javanese subspecies . It is rather strongly curved by the sagittal plane, differing in this feature from the ulnar bone of the Javanese, but resembling a Sumatran bone of the same name. However, these bones can have a fairly wide range of individual features, which is observed in the Amur subspecies. The upper third and fourth premolars have a simpler structure than that of the modern tiger.
