History
The church was built in 1896 - 1899 by the project of engineer T.U. Yazykov in the Neo-Byzantine style . A plot of land was donated by the city authorities, local industrial enterprises donated building materials, and construction money was received from the Russian government and from the Holy Synod .
The central throne was consecrated in honor of St. Alexander Nevsky , and in the basement there is a church in honor of Nicholas of Myra .
The church is seven-domed (central - 17 meters high). Above the main entrance is a bell tower with 9 bells, one of which is the second largest in Finland (bell weight 4973 kg.).
The church was severely damaged during the fighting in 1918 and was later thoroughly restored.
