History
The corps was formed by order of the Supreme High Command Headquarters No. 00138 of December 31, 1941 [2] as the 2nd Army Corps, later the 2nd Rifle Corps. By the same order, the corps was given the name “Guards” and Colonel Alexander Ilyich Lizyukov was appointed commander of the corps.

Composition
The corps was ordered to form before January 10, 1942 and have the following composition:
- 8th Guards Rifle Division ,
- 38th Separate Rifle Brigade ,
- 37th Separate Rifle Brigade ,
- 75th Marine Rifle Brigade ,
- 26th Separate Cadet Brigade .
On the instructions of the commander of the Western Front, the 212nd, 213rd and 214th ski battalions were included in the corps. On January 18, the 71st Tank Brigade consisting of 10 KB tanks, 16 T-34 tanks and 20 T-60 tanks was transferred to the corps. One guards mortar division consisting of 12 installations each, one communications battalion, one transport battalion, autorotists - 150 motor vehicles and guzhrats - 250 sledges (wagons) entered. The point of formation of the corps management and the area of concentration of formations is the settlement of Nakhabino .

In the army
- February 3, 1942 in the strip between Staraya Russa and the river. Tacking the corps is introduced into the battle. On the first day of the offensive, he fought south 15 km to the Kholmskoye Highway, and on February 15 in the Kholm region he came into contact with units of the 3rd Shock Army. The corps went deep into the rear of the enemy’s enemy group and thus cut off the enemy’s group of forces from its main forces. At the end of February, the neighboring 1st Guards Rifle Corps , also advancing from the north, the corps, in the Zaluchye area, joined the 42nd Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Strike Army . The external and internal fronts of the environment were formed, with a gap between them of up to 40 km.
The 16th fascist German army was surrounded for more than two months. However, it was not possible to liquidate its Soviet units then.
- Throughout the spring and summer of 1942, parts of the corps fought hard for the city of Kholm , but could not take it.
- Since 08.13.1943, parts of the corps go on the offensive in the area of the city of Dukhovshchina . Having met stubborn resistance of the enemy, corps divisions are moving on to defense.
- On September 3, 1943, parts of the corps renew their offensive and, having wedged themselves in the enemy’s defenses, on September 8th are fixed on the line along the eastern bank of the river Velenia .
- On September 14, 1943, parts of the corps advanced and break through the enemy’s spiritual defense with access to the river. Tsarevich .
- Since September 25, 1943, the corps is part of the 4th strike army and takes part in the Nevel operation, which ends on 10/10/1943 with the liberation of the city of Nevel .
- From December 9 to December 24, 1943, parts of the corps participated in the Gorodok operation.
- In early March 1944, the corps was transferred to the 6th Guards Army and transferred to defense at the Vitebsk - Polotsk line .
- April 17-18, 433 on the basis of the order of the Military Council, part 2 of the GSK were transferred to the 22 armies, and the control of the corps with the corps units and 17 GSD accepted into its composition, on the basis of the order of the Kalinin Front, concentrated in the region south of Toropets and started fighting troop training.
- The guards banner was handed to the corps on 09/08/44. (order 2 of the State Civil Code No. 0137 dated 08.09.44).
- The annual holiday of the corps management is set on December 31 - the formation day.
