According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 1,230.251 km 2 , of which 1,227.661 km 2 is land and 1,200 km 2 or 0.250% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , there are 37,586 residents in the district, consisting of 13,905 households and 10,345 families . The population density is 31.00 people per km 2 . There are 14,990 residential buildings on the territory of the district, with a building density of about 12.00 buildings per km 2 . The racial composition of the population: whites - 86.84%, African Americans - 11.48%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.28%, Asians - 0.45%, Hawaiians - 0.05%, representatives of other races - 2.73 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.16%. Hispanic was 7.48% of the population regardless of race .
34.00% of the total number of households are children under the age of 18, 57.30% of households are married couples living together, 11.90% of households are single women without a spouse, 25.60% of households households are not related to families , 21.50% of households are one person, 9.20% of households are elderly (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.67 people, and the average family size is 3.06 people.
