Biography

Born in a teacher’s family. In 1887, Mr .. graduated from the course of sciences at the gymnasium of Riga. He graduated from the medical faculty of Yuriev University in 1893. As a student, he worked as a hospital of the Jewish community for the poor in the Coven province, participated in the elimination of the cholera epidemic in Nizhny Novgorod.

Since 1894, he worked as a zemstvo doctor in the Olonets district in Vidlitsa , where, in addition to medical activities, he facilitated the opening of 2 schools, the Pushkin Library.

He was a member of the Olonets district zemstvo assembly [2] .

In 1904-1923, 1929-1940 - Director of the Petrozavodsk feldsher-obstetric school (now Petrozavodsk Medical College [3] ), taught pathology, pharmacology and histology in it. At the same time he was a prosector and headed the bacteriological office of the Olonets provincial hospital, after 1918 - the Central hospital of the Karelian labor commune .

He was a doctor and hygiene teacher at the Petrozavodsk Mariinsky Gymnasium , and a hygiene teacher at the Olonets Diocesan Women's College [4] .

In 1903, 1906 and 1910 he was on foreign missions in Germany and Switzerland.

In 1904 - resident of emergency hospitals, military doctor.

From 1913 to 1929 he was the chief physician of the Central Hospital of Petrozavodsk.

He was a member of the committee of the Petrozavodsk Alekseevskaya Public Library, in 1918 - chairman of the committee and head of the library.

He taught at the People’s University in Petrozavodsk in 1918, and also gave numerous scientific and popularizing lectures on medicine.

Member of the CPSU (b) from 1930 to 1937 (expelled in connection with the arrest of his son). Chairman of the Health Section and Member of the Petrozavodsk City Council.

After evacuation from Petrozavodsk in the years of World War II - in August 1941, head of the sanitary laboratory in Pudozh, in July 1941 - head of practice and teacher of pharmacology at the feldsher-obstetric and dental schools in Saratov.

Since 1943 - Head of the Karelian-Finnish Republican Sanitary Laboratory.

Since 1944 he taught hygiene at the Teachers Institute of Petrozavodsk .

In 1944 he was awarded the badge "Excellent Health Care", and in 1946 the medal "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War"

Memory

During his lifetime, the name was borne by the hospital in with. Vidlitsy.

In the 1930s, the First Karelian Medical Polytechnic; since 1937, the feldsher-obstetric school was named after Dr. I. A. Shif.

In honor of I. A. Shif, a memorial plaque was opened at the Petrozavodsk Medical College [5] .
