Biography
The son of a professor of philosophy. He studied history and philosophy at the University of Bonn and Freiburg , then in London , where he met with Bernard Shaw . He participated in the work of the Fabian society , as a result of which, over time, he came to socialist ideas .
Member of the First World War, volunteered to join the German army, with the rank of lieutenant, he commanded a company on the Western Front . The death of his friend August Macke greatly influenced the attitude of L. Erdman to the war. A serious nervous breakdown in 1916 ended for him sending to the rear.
He got a job at a telegraph agency. In 1916 he married Elizabeth Macke , the widow of his friend August Macke.
After the war, he worked as a journalist, was a trade unionist. Press officer at the International Confederation of Trade Unions in Amsterdam .
He became a member of the SPD . He worked in Cologne as editor of the Rheinische Zeitung . In 1924 founded the magazine Die Arbeit. He remained editor-in-chief of the new magazine until 1933, and had a significant influence on the influence on the trade union leadership of Germany on current issues of the pre-war period. He spoke in articles against fascism .
L. Erdman continued to engage in journalism, and after the establishment of the dictatorship of the National Socialists in Germany.
In 1939 he was sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp , "for preventive reasons . " Trying to protest against the ill-treatment of prisoners, Erdman was terribly beaten and died from injuries of internal organs on September 18, 1939.
