Story
After a political exile, the nihilist Joseph Wisleneu returns to a quiet provincial town, along with his friend Pavel Gordanov, who was summoned by the letter of his former beloved Glafira Bodrostina. Bodrostina, being married to a rich landowner, wants with the help of Gordanov to get rid of his elderly husband and get his money. Gordanov and Vislenev are confronted with those who personify the patriarchal way of life of the Russian province — the family of retired Major Forov, the family of General Syntyanin, the landowner Podozerov, who is in love with Sister Visleneva Larisa, the local priest-philosopher Father Evangel, there are no such patterns, and there is a white pattern, and there is no one too white, too, and there is no need for it, and there is no tactile pattern, one evangelical, one white and one white pattern, one evogelical, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white patterns, one white pattern, one white pattern, one white patterns, one no more than one white strokes, one evangelical temper, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one tempo, one time, one countess, one countess, one counters, one Р Р ° РР ° In the end, the implementation of Bodrostina’s plan to eliminate her husband leads to the destruction of this patriarchal world. However, along with him, physically and spiritually, both those for whom nihilism has become synonymous with criminal permissiveness towards the achievement of their own selfish ends are also dying.
Literary basis
The novel “On Knives” was published by N. S. Leskov in 1870–1871 and usually does not belong to the best works of the writer, which was recognized both by his contemporaries and N. S. Leskov himself. The main message of the novel was the harsh criticism of Russian nihilism, which, according to the author, condones criminal and immoral personalities.
The first film adaptation of the novel was carried out in 1915 by Alexander Panteleev .
