Description

Members of the family are a highly specialized group of gamasid mites, whose representatives are permanent endoparasites of birds. Ticks of this family are of universal distribution, and nowadays almost all modern detachments are known from birds. The world fauna of ticks-rinonissid has more than 500 species combined in 11 genera [2] .

Mites-rhinonissides parasitize in the respiratory system of birds, where they are localized mainly in the nasal cavity, less often in the trachea and lung sacs. Moving on the surface of the vascularized epithelial tissue of these parts of the respiratory system, rinonissidis feed on the blood or host lymph. When feeding rhinonissides injure the nasal epithelium and blood vessels, causing a disease of the birds, called rhinonissoidosis ( Rhinonyssoidosis avium ) [2] . The most characteristic symptom that is observed when the respiratory system of birds is infected with rhino-nissides is a hyperemia of the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity. In captive birds, pathological conditions, such as aerocystitis, aphonia, and cachexia caused by rhinonissides, are usually more severe than in wild birds [2] . Tick infestation of the genera Mesonyssus , Sternostoma and Ptilonyssus , causes aerocystitis, tracheitis, pneumonia, which often leads to the death of the hosts [2] .
