Biography

He was born on August 10, 1890 in Kolomna in the family of a self-taught artist who worked in a picturesque artel painting a church. After his father died in 1897, leaving his family - a widow and seven children from one to 16 years old, without any means of livelihood, a seven-year-old boy was placed in a Moscow shelter in Syromyatniki, called the "School of the Prince of Oldenburg " [2] . Four years later, he was accepted by the state-owned post boarder at the Nabilkovsky Commercial School . Among the teachers of Homeland in the school was a well-known specialist in the Napoleonic Wars , Professor Vasyutinsky , about whom Rodin later spoke very positively in his memoirs.

Already in the second grade, he began to publish the school’s manuscript journal Zvyozdochka; in 1905, as a representative from the elementary grades, he entered the strike committee; in 1908 he entered a revolutionary circle, work in which very soon disappointed him. In the same year, he organized a self-education club called the “Party”, during the period of its existence (1908-1913) more than two hundred people visited it, mainly students from various secondary and higher educational institutions (including young poets Tikhon Churilin , Nadezhda Lvova , Peter Zaitsev). Along with serious disputes [3] , literary and musical evenings and excursions around the Moscow Region were arranged.

After graduating from college in 1909, A. F. Rodin began to work in a large trading house “N. A. Korolev and Co. ”, and a year later he entered the evening department of the Commercial Institute . In 1914, at the suggestion of A. A. Pokrovsky , he agreed to take the post of executive secretary-organizer of the circle of storytellers at the Griboedov Library in the Krestovsky outpost. Since that time, Rodin began to conduct excursions for adolescents, who turned out to be more attractive to them than stories.

In 1917, the first book of A. F. Rodin was published, dedicated to the theme of excursion: “Summaries of educational excursions near Moscow. Kolomenskoye. Kuzminki. Ostankino. Losinoostrovskaya. Sparrow Hills". The main focus of the pedagogical activity of the Motherland at this time was the creation of children's and youth clubs. Then, working at the Institute for Planning and Organization of Public Education, he dealt with issues of games and toys - he wrote books: Games and Entertainment, Wit Games, Games in the Winter Outdoors, Summer Playground for Children, “How to make board games yourself,” etc. Having an economic education, he wrote a number of articles and essays on the economy and development of Moscow: “The Moscow Five-Year Plan”, “Moscow in Remelting”, “Tomorrow of the Moscow Region”, etc. In his essays that appeared in the magazines "Pioneer", "Knowledge is Power", "Counselor", "Young Guard "were more local history than economic, - this is especially manifested in the book" Business Street of the big city. Production and local history essay on Myasnitskaya Street in Moscow ”(1926).

After local history fell into disgrace, A.F. Rodin began to conduct historical circles in schools, in the homes of pioneers, and held seminars for teachers. For classes, he invited lecturers to the members of the closed "Old Moscow" - P. N. Miller , B. S. Zemenkov , N. A. Geinike , the library seeker Ivan the Terrible I. Ya. Stelletsky .

In November 1941, he organized a historical circle for children at the House of Scientists ; in 1943, he began conducting a local history seminar at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Teachers. At the initiative of A.F. Rodin, a Headquarters for the Study of Moscow was created, which began to hold Moscow competitions.
