Botanical Description

Perennial herbaceous plant forming a dense turf. Stems 15-50 cm high, straight or cranked.

Leaves are bristle-shaped, 0.3-0.8 mm in diameter, grayish-green in color. Ligula of vegetative leaves 1-3 mm long, stem - 1-1.5 mm long [2] [3] .

The inflorescence is a compressed panicle 6-8 cm long. Spikelet scales 1.5-2.5 mm long, lanceolate, pointed, lilac in color, with a whitish border. The lower floral scales are 8.5-10 mm, with hairs and a crown at the base of the spine. The awns are 8-10 cm long, cranked, purple. It blooms in May - June, bears fruit in July - August [2] [3] .

Fruits are carried by wind and animals [4] .

Ecology and distribution

Xerophyte . It lives in the steppes, rocky slopes, gravels at an altitude of 1800–2200 meters above sea level [3] .

Endemic of Altai . Rare finds of the species are known in the mountains of Western China and Mongolia .

Guard Status

It is listed in the Red Books of Russia and the Altai Republic [5] . It disappears due to the narrow environmental amplitude and grazing in the places of their growth [6] .
