Biography

Patricia Vartush was born in a sports family: her father Peter is a football player, her mother Doris was a ski instructor. Patricia herself, who began to play tennis at the age of seven [1] , besides neg, is engaged in swimming, cycling, skiing and ice skating. Her tennis idol was another Austrian player - Thomas Muster [2] .

For the first time in professional ITF tournaments, Patricia played in 1993, failing to finish her first match. In May 1995 , at the age of 16, she reached the finals in singles at the ITF tournament in Salzburg, and in November in Le Havre, together with Czech Marketa Shtuskova, she won her first title at this level. In mid- 1996, Bartush won two ITF singles in a row, winning another one singles title and four doubles in the next two years.

In June 1999, Vartush won the Tashkent Open - WTA Tour - in doubles, where her partner was Russian Evgenia Kulikovskaya . In the fall, she played twice in the finals of the WTA tournaments: first in the singles at the Brazilian Open , where she defeated two seeded rivals on the way to the final, and then in the doubles in Pattaya (Thailand). She finished the year among the hundred best tennis players in the world in both singles and doubles. At the beginning of 2000, in Bogota, Vartush won her first WTA tournament in singles after defeating three seeded rivals (including the first racket of the tournament Sylvia Plishke ) and in April climbed the ranking to 65th place, the highest in her solo career, after this at his first Wimbledon, reaching the third round, and then speaking at the Olympics in Sydney (lost in the second round Aranche Sanchez ). During this year, Vartush twice lost in the doubles finals and, as in the previous season, finished it in the first hundred of the rating in both categories. In 2001, she won the Tashkent Open for the second time, now paired with Hungarian Petra Mandula .

In mid- 2002, the most successful period in the career of Bartush began. In less than a year (from June 2002 to April 2003 ), she won four WTA tournaments together with Mandula and played three more finals (twice with Mandula and once with compatriot Barbara Shett . These achievements were supplemented by the second WTA title in singles won in Casablanca (Morocco), and exit with the Austrian national team in the semifinal of the Federation Cup . In the semifinals, Vartush, who lost the match to Conchita Martinez on the first day, equalized the score in the second match, defeating Arancha Sanchez, but in the end paired with Shett still lost to experienced Spaniards, missing and x to the final [3] . Success in WTA tournaments along with reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open in 2002 (after defeating the eighth seeded pair of Conchita Martinez- Patricia Tarabini ) secured Vartush in May 2003, 22nd place in the WTA doubles ranking - a record for her career.Soon after that, Vartush and Mandula reached the quarter finals and at Wimbledon, defeating the fifth seeded pair of Kara Black - Elena Likhovtseva . At the same time, Wartush's successes were more than modest: with the exception of reaching the semifinals in Doha (UAE) in February, her weight season, failed to pass in the WTA tournament on the second round.

The Vartush-Mandula couple broke up after losing in the third round of the 2004 Australian Open . After that, Vartush no longer made it to the finals in the WTA tournaments, but with the Austrian team repeated the achievement two years ago, again reaching the semifinal of the Federation Cup. In the framework of this competition, she inflicted the first defeat in the Federation Cup for 15 years to Martina Navratilova , beating her and Jill Kraybas together with Shett [4] .

At the end of 2004, Patricia Vartush announced the end of her playing career [5] . After completing performances, she began her coaching career, in particular, working in the sports club of the Seefeld ski resort [1] .
