Biography
Graduate of the Irkutsk Gymnasium. The son of the Polish woman exiled to the settlement. He lived in great poverty. Shortly before meeting Przhevalsky, he entered the headquarters of the East Siberian Military District as a topographer [1] .
The drug Robert Köher, invited by Przewalski from Warsaw, categorically refused to go any further. Przhevalsky chose to go on a trip with a young man who had just graduated from high school. The dispatch had to be postponed, since Przhevalsky gave his future companion lessons in preparing animals. During the expedition, the traveler "daily asked <Yagunov> lessons from geography and history and before dinner checked his knowledge" [2] .
Soon after arriving in St. Petersburg, Przhevalsky identified Yagunov at the Warsaw Junker School and handed over to his friend a geography teacher I. L. Fateev [3] . Yagunov had special drawing abilities. Przhevalsky encouraged the development of his talent as much as possible, sent him works on the theory of perspective, but in the letter "he asked me not to go particularly into the study of the rules of art, for then craft would come out, and not creativity" [2] .
Yagunov studied well, finished the course as the first student and subsequently served as lieutenant of the Kexholm Grenadier Emperor of the Austrian Regiment .
Przhevalsky planned that Yagunov, a reliable trusted friend who had already received a military education, would be able to take part in the Second Central Asian trip. But on June 20 (8), 1875, Lieutenant Jagunov drowned while swimming in the Vistula River [2] .
"I still can’t get used to the idea that Yagunov no longer exists. It seems that he is about to come to our village - he was just among us recently, and now has turned into nothing .... Mother I’ll send Yagunov’s drawings (of his son), as soon as I get a letter from her. I will have to send the old woman 25 rubles of money, otherwise she, in the sense of money, is in an extreme position " [2] .
Now the "Album of Amur Species" by Nikolay Yagunov with nine pencil drawings [3] is on display at the Przhevalsky House-Museum in Sloboda [4] [3] .
