Service history

The brig Novaya Zemlya was laid down at the Solombala Shipyard on December 4, 1817 and after launching on July 10, 1819, became part of the White Sea flotilla of Russia. The construction was conducted by the shipmaster A. M. Kurochkin [1] [2] .

The first voyage in the brig to Novaya Zemlya was undertaken in 1819. The vessel left Arkhangelsk in the direction of the archipelago, but because of the impassable ice and in connection with cases of scurvy among the crew members, it was forced to return to Arkhangelsk. Over the next year, the brig carried a military service in Arkhangelsk [2] .

On July 14, 1821, the brig again left Arkhangelsk and by July 31 arrived at Novaya Zemlya, where until August 30 the crew surveyed the coastline, after which the brig headed for Arkhangelsk, where it arrived on September 11. On June 17, 1822, Novaya Zemlya left Arkhangelsk to the northern coast of the Kola Peninsula . From June 28 to August 3, an inventory of the Murmansk coast was carried out on the ship, after which the brig headed for Novaya Zemlya, which reached its shores by August 8. Moving further north, the brig surveyed the coast. After the ship reached Cape Nassau, it descended to the south and on August 17 approached the Matochkin Strait. Until August 27, an inventory of the coast of the South Island from the Matochkin Strait Shar to Cape South Goose was made, after which the brig left Novaya Zemlya and returned to Arkhangelsk on 6 September. In 1823, the brig left Arkhangelsk on June 11 and from June 21 to July 18, an inventory was made of the Murmansk coast to Cape Vardo, from July 27 - the Matochkin Strait and the western coast of the South Island, after which Novaya Zemlya approached the Strait of Kara , where, with strong excitement, on August 20, he damaged the steering wheel and stern, hitting the sandbank. The next day, the food and the steering wheel were repaired and the brig left the coast of Novaya Zemlya, and by August 30 returned to Arkhangelsk, while an inventory of the northern coast of Kolguev Island was kept along the way. In this expedition, Matvey Andreyevich Gerasimov served as a pilot on the ship, famous for his heroism during the Anglo-Russian war , becoming one of the first civilians awarded with the Cross of St. George [3] .

On June 18, 1824, the brig left Arkhangelsk to record the east coast of Novaya Zemlya, reached the Kara Gate, on June 24, but further progress to the north or east turned out to be impossible, and on August 19 the brig took a reverse course. On September 11, the vessel returned to Arkhangelsk [2] .

From 1826 to 1837, he held military posts at the mouth of the Northern Dvina and near the island of Mudyug , and also sailed to the Solovki islands . In 1841 he was dismantled in Arkhangelsk [1] [2] .
