Alpine carnation [2] [3] ( lat. Dianthus alpinus ) is a species of dicotyledonous plants of the genus Carnation ( Dianthus ) of the family Clove ( Caryophyllaceae ) [4] [5] . The plant was first described in 1753 by the Swedish taxonist Karl Linnaeus [6] [7] .

The German name is Alpen-Nelke [5] .
In the wild, distributed in Austria , northeast Italy and part of Slovenia [5] . It grows in the eastern [5] Alps , in limestone areas at an altitude of 1000-2500 m [3] .
Perennial plant with a height of 20-25 cm. The flowers are red-purple [3] .
Varieties and hybrids of alpine cloves are cultivated as ornamental . The wild-growing “variant” of a plant is more finicky to the environment and does not withstand artificially created conditions poorly [3] .
