According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 893.551 km 2 , of which 875.421 km 2 are land and 18.130 km 2 or 2.120% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [2] , 71,330 residents of 29,780 households and 20,518 families live in the okrug. The population density is 82.00 people per km 2 . There are 32,451 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 37,00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 93.36%, African - Americans - 3.88%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.32%, Asians - 0.83%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 0.38 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.22%. Hispanics accounted for 1.10% of the population, regardless of race .
As part of 29.60% of the total number of households , children under the age of 18 live, 53.80% of households are couples living together, 11.50% of households are single women without a spouse, 31.10% of households households are not related to families , 27.70% of households consist of one person, 12.10% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.37 people and the average family size is 2.88 people.
