Biography

Dmitry Stefanov was born in 1911 in the village of Tolkachevo [1] . After graduating from elementary school, he worked as a loader in Kondrovo . In June 1941, Stefanov was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since July of the same year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War [2] .

By October 1943, Guards Junior Lieutenant Dmitry Stefanov commanded a platoon of the 83rd Guards Rifle Regiment of the 27th Guards Rifle Division of the 8th Guards Army of the South-Western Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Zaporozhye region of the Ukrainian SSR . October 14, 1943 Stefanov in the battle near the village of Green Yar closed the embrasure of the German bunker, at the cost of his life ensuring the execution of the combat task by the platoon. It was originally buried in Zeleny Yar, later reburied in a mass grave at Kapustyan cemetery in Zaporozhye [2] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated February 22, 1944, for "courage and heroism shown in the Zaporozhye operation," junior lieutenant Dmitry Stefanov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union to the guard.

In honor of Stefanov, his native village was renamed. In the name of D. N. Stefanova, the streets in Kondrovo [3] and Zaporozhye [2] are named.
