William Mitford ( born William Mitford ; 02/10/1744 - 02/08/1827) - English historian and politician, member of parliament. The author of one of the first extensive works on the ancient Greek history of the 8-volume “History of Greece” (1784-1794). As a conservative, Mitford reflected his views in this work [4] . A Tory supporter, he praises Sparta, its policies and institutions [5] .

The son of a lawyer (barrister). He graduated from Queens College of Oxford (1761).
Mitford, paying attention to the development of slavery , emphasized that only a small minority could enjoy freedom in Ancient Greece [4] .
He died in the native village of Exbury after a long illness.
