According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 1,546,232 km 2 , of which 1,491.841 km are land and 56,980 km 2 or 3,600% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 33,893 residents of 12,084 households and 8,362 families live in the okrug. The population density is 23.00 people per km 2 . There are 13,328 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 9 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 88.71%, African - Americans - 9.29%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.16%, Asians - 0.24%, Hawaiians - 0.04%, representatives of other races - 0.81 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.76%. Hispanics accounted for 1.54% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 31.30% are children under the age of 18, 56.00% of households are married couples living together, 9.20% of households are single women without a spouse, and 30.80% of households households are not related to families , 26.90% of households consist of one person, 13.80% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone.
