Rene Vandereycken ( Dutch: René Vandereycken ; July 22, 1953 , Hasselt ) - Belgian footballer and football coach. Best known as a player in the Belgian club Brugge . Coached the national team of Belgium from January 1, 2006 to April 7, 2009 .

Club career

He began his professional career at the club from his hometown - Hasselt . In 1974 he moved to Brugge , for which he played 7 seasons. In total, the club spent 233 matches. In 1981, he signed a contract with the Italian Genoa , for which he spent 2 seasons. In 1983 he returned to Belgium and played for Anderlecht , for which 94 matches and scored 13 goals. He spent the 1986/87 season in the German Blau-Weiss 1890. He ended his career as a player in 1989, playing for Ghent .

Team Career

In total, Rene spent 50 matches for the national team of Belgium and scored 3 goals. Vice-champion of the 1980 European Championship in Italy (goal scorer in the final match of the tournament). Participant in the 1984 European Championship in France and the 1986 World Cup in Mexico .

Coach Career

Rene coached Twente for 2 seasons, Anderlecht for several months and was dismissed in June 2005 at Genk , despite the club getting into European competitions. He was also the coach of Ghent , Standard from Liège , Molenbeck and Mainz 05 . Vandereikken loves tactical and defensive play.

He was the head coach of the Belgian national team from January 2006 to April 2009. During this time, he was the subject of great criticism in the press for his tactical decisions. He was fired on April 7, 2009 after the national team lost the second qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup of the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina [1] [2] .
