Physical Properties
Sodium disulfide forms yellow crystals of several modifications:
- α-Na 2 S 2 , hexagonal syngony , space group P 6 2m , cell parameters a = 0.7629 nm, c = 0.5394 nm;
- β-Na 2 S 2 , hexagonal syngony , space group P 6 3 / mmc , cell parameters a = 0.4494 nm, c = 1.0228 nm.
It is soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol .
When heated, it darkens and at 400 ° C turns a light red-brown color. In the melt is a mobile dark brown liquid.
Forms a crystalline hydrate of the composition Na 2 S 2 • 5H 2 O.
