Biography
Ivan Starykh was born in 1916 in the village of Logachevka (now Shchigrovsky District, Kursk Region ). After graduating from six grades of school, he worked on a collective farm. In 1938 - 1940 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Demobilized, he lived and worked in Moscow . In September 1942, Starykh was re-drafted into the army. Since July 1943 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By September 1943, Junior Sergeant Ivan Starykh was in command of the 71st Guards Separate Engineer Battalion of the 62nd Guards Rifle Division of the 37th Army of the Steppe Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On September 28, 1943, the Starykh branch ferried divisions of the division across the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Soloshino, Kobelyaksky district of the Poltava region of the Ukrainian SSR . When the calculation of the pontoon was out of order, Starykh and his comrades replaced him, continuing the crossing. During the next crossing, he died from the explosion of a German shell. He was buried near the village of Soloshino [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 22, 1944, Junior Sergeant Ivan Starykh was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union for "courage and heroism shown during the crossing of the Dnieper" guard. He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
