According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 3,216.421 km 2 , of which 1,282.492 km 2 are land and 1,933.955 km 2 or 60.130% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 28,274 residents of 11,406 households and 7,881 families live in the okrug. The population density is 22.00 people per km 2 . There are 16,063 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 13 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 95.84%, African - Americans - 0.73%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.78%, Asians - 0.28%, Hawaiians - 0.02%, representatives of other races - 0.82 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.53%. Hispanics made up 3.01% of the population, regardless of race .
