Nikolai Petrovich Kovalev ( May 14, 1954 , Kalinin ) - Soviet canoeist rower , later kayak and canoe rowing coach, sports functionary. Biography
Nikolai Kovalev was born on May 14, 1954 in Kalinin . He began to actively engage in rowing following the example of his elder brothers at the age of nine; he first underwent training under the guidance of master of sports Leonid Katalymov, and later trained with Honored Trainer of the RSFSR Anatoly Tsvetkov. He achieved the first serious success in 1973 in international competitions in Romania, when he won a ten-kilometer distance with a single canoe. For this achievement at the end of the season recognized as the master of sports of international class. In total, he three times became the champion and winner of the USSR Cup, repeatedly won and became one of the winners in the RSFSR championships. He defended the country's honor at the world championships of 1974 and 1975 in Mexico and Yugoslavia, respectively.
After completing his sports career in 1981, Kovalev graduated from the Volgograd State Institute of Physical Culture (now the Volgograd State Academy of Physical Culture ) and got a job as a rowing and canoeing coach at the Kalinin children's and youth sports school Spartak. Over the years, coaching has produced many talented athletes, including sixteen masters of sports of the USSR and Russia, four international-class masters of sports, and one honored master of sports, his son Ignat , who achieved victories at the European and world championships. Awarded the honorary title " Honored Coach of Russia ".
In the early 2000s, Nikolai Kovalev headed the rowing and canoeing federation of the Tver region, engaged in the development and promotion of rowing, having achieved considerable success here - during this period such outstanding champions as Alexei Volkonsky , Ilya Pervukhin , Yury Postrigai appeared in the Tver rowing . Currently holds the position of director of the regional center of sports training "School of higher sports skills." In 2014, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary and for his great contribution to the development of the city of Tver and the whole region, he was awarded the Emblem of the Governor "For the good of the land of Tver" and the Gratitude of the Mayor [1] .
