Biography

By 1242, Robert owned land in Barrett (Lincolnshire) [2] . After the death of his father and grandfather, Robert inherited their possessions, including (formerly Stanthorpe) in Durham County, with a center in Rabbi, as well as the extensive possessions that his father inherited from his mother, including Branepet in Durham, Sheriff-Hatton in North Yorkshire and land in Lincolnshire [3] [4] .

In 1251, Robert and his brother Jeffrey handed over Christmas venison to the king venison from the forest in Jeltres ( Yorkshire ). In 1252, Robert received the Sutton estate in Jeltres. In 1255, Robert was presented with deer for the park in Rabbi, and in 1256, Robert was granted the right to dog hunting for hares, foxes and cats in the forests of Yorkshire [2] .

In the 1250s, Robert became one of the prominent northern barons. In 1258, Robert was appointed keeper of the castles of Bamborough and . At the same time, he was ordered to save the young king of Scotland, Alexander III , captured by his barons. At the same time, Robert was made governor of the castles of and Wark. [1] In January – November of the same year, Robert was the sheriff of Northumberland [2] [4] .

In 1260, Robert was in Chichester , from where he was called on a campaign against the Welsh. In 1261, he was appointed judge of the forests for Trent [1] .

In the early 1260s, the conflict between King Henry III and the barons led to a political crisis, which escalated into the so-called Second Baron War [5] . Robert took part in it. In 1263, he was among the barons who guaranteed compliance with the so-called “ Oxford provisions ” [1] . Then he was appointed sheriff of Yorkshire and commander of the royal army for Trent. On June 12, 1263, Robert was captain for the defense of York and its environs. [4]

Robert was among the barons who decided to ask for arbitration of the King of France Louis IX to resolve the dispute between King Henry III and Simon de Montfort [1] [2] [6] .

In 1264, Robert was the Chief Justice Officer for Forests. Then he wrote to the king that he wanted to strengthen the Pontefract castle and unite with Robert Bruce and a number of other northern barons [1] [7] .

In the same 1264, Robert was called to London, and in December to Woodstock, where the release of Prince Edward was discussed. The following year, Robert visited the captive king Henry III. For a while he sided with the barons, but soon again switched to the side of the king [1] .

After the defeat of the baronial army in 1265, Robert was again made the chief justice of the forests outside Trent, and was also appointed governor of a number of castles [1] .

In 1267–1268, Robert was a commissioner examining petitions from deprived of inheritance [4] .

In 1275, Robert was the chief assessor in the northern counties. In November 1276, he attended a parliamentary meeting in Westminster, where the Welsh ruler Llewelyn up Grifid was declared a rebel. In 1277 he was called up for a campaign in Wales, but his son John sent two knights on behalf of his father. In the same year, Robert received custody of Scarborough Castle [1] .

On August 2, 1282, Robert was called to Rudlan , but he refused to go, reporting his weakness. Soon after, he died. His body was buried in the Franciscan church in York [1] .

Robert's eldest son, Robert II, died before his father back in 1271, so he was succeeded by his grandson Ranulf [1] .

Marriage and children

1st wife: her name and origin is unknown. Children:

  • John de Neville

2nd wife: earlier on April 13, 1273 Ida (d. After May 18, 1315), widow of Sir Roger Bertram of Milford (December 5, 1224 - after March 6, 1272). There were no children from this marriage. After Robert's death, no later than May 8, 1285, Ida married Sir John Fitz-Marmaduke (d. Until August 16, 1311).
