Biography

Born into a Vepsian peasant family. He graduated from the four-year higher primary school in St. Petersburg , attended agricultural courses. He began his career in 1913 as a attendant at the St. Petersburg sea port.

In 1915, drafted into the army. After graduating from the school of ensigns, he fought on the Western Front , a participant in the First World War - the company commander.

After demobilization in 1918, he worked in water transport organizations in the village of Voznesenie, Leningrad Oblast, and edited the Mayak water magazine.

In 1919, drafted into the Red Army , a participant in the Civil War , fought near Petrograd , on the Karelian front .

In 1923 he was sent to study at the Leningrad State University on the ethnographic department in the Finno-Ugric direction. Upon graduation from the university, he entered graduate school and was appointed secretary of the ethnographic department of the geographic department of the university, private secretary to professor V. G. Bogoraz . He was deputy editor of the journal "Ethnographer-researcher", secretary of the Leningrad branch of the Committee on the North of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee .

In 1928–1931 - Director of the Karelian State Museum of Local History in Petrozavodsk .

In May 1931 he was appointed deputy director of the established Karelian Research Institute . He prepared more than seventy scientific publications, worked on the collections "History of Karelia", "Vepsian Folklore", "Vepsa. Ethnographic essay. He taught at the Karelian Pedagogical Institute .

In July 1937, he was arrested in a fabricated case of the “counter-revolutionary nationalist organization Gyllinga - Rovio ”, on November 27, 1937, was shot in the vicinity of Petrozavodsk by order of the troika of the NKVD of the Karelian ASSR.

Rehabilitated in 1965.
