He served in the Lyon printing house, devoting free hours to reading scientific books, then went to Paris, where he studied philosophy under the guidance of Ramus, and to Padua, where he took a course in medical sciences. Returning to his homeland, in Basel, he was engaged in medical practice and teaching the Greek language, ethics and medicine.
