History

Under the Western Han Empire, Zishi County (兹 氏 县) was created here. During the dictatorship of Wang Man, it was renamed Zitong (兹 同 县), but under the Eastern Han Empire, the county was returned to its former name. Under the Western Jin Empire, in 307 it was renamed Xicheng (隰 城县), and was subsequently disbanded. Under the North Wei Empire, in 484, Xicheng County was re-created. Under the Tang Empire, in 760, Xicheng County was renamed Xihe (西河 县).

Under the Ming Empire, in 1368, the Xihe County was disbanded and the Fenzhou (汾州) region was formed, to which the districts of Pingyao, Jiexu and Xiaoya were subordinate. In 1595, the region was elevated to the Fenzhou City Council (汾州 府), and Fenyang County (汾阳 县) was formed in these places.

In 1949, the Fengyang Special District (汾阳 专区) was created, and the county became part of it. In 1951, Fengyang Special District was disbanded, and the county became part of the Yuqi Special Region (榆次 专区). In 1958, the county was transferred to the Jinzhong Special District (晋中 专区). In 1967, the Jinzhong Special District was renamed the Jinzhong District (晋中 地区).

In 1971, Luiliang County (吕梁 地区) was formed, and Fenyang County became its member. In 1996, Fengyang County was transformed into a city county.
