About the album
A Beard of Stars is the first record in which the percussionist Mickey Finn made his debut, replacing the original drummer Steve Took [1] , as well as the first album in which Bolan used an electric guitar , an instrument that was previously used only for recording the single “King of the Rumbling Spires ”, consisting of the song of the same name and the song“ Do You Remember ”. Despite the fact that Tuk is not among the participants in the recording, four songs with his participation, including “Great Horse” recorded during the spring sessions of 1969, were duplicated by the musicians for release on the upcoming album [2] . The album took twenty-first place in the list of UK Albums Chart [3] . The song “By the Light of a Magical Moon” was released as a single. Critic of Allmusic ( Mark Deming ) called A Beard of Stars a turning point where Bolan turns from an unrepentant hippie into a smug “rock star” [1] . In general, the sound of the record is dominated by psychedelic rock , but in some places in the compositions you can find elements of such styles as garage rock and proto-punk . Also, musicians pay attention to various experiments with sound; in the song “Pavilions of Sun” there is a wah-wah solo , in “Fist Heart Mighty Dawn Dart” the bass part is re-duplicated to create a more dense sound, and the composition “Elemental Child” is made in the style of low-file music.
