This is the first full-fledged series for Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor [1] . The role of his companion, Clara Oswald, was performed by Jenna Coleman [1] . Also included in the episode are Niv Macintosh , Catherine Stewart and Dan Starkey, who returned to their roles as Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax, respectively [2] . Capaldi's predecessor, Matt Smith , also appeared in the role of the Eleventh Doctor at the very end of the episode [3] .
Synopsis
Once in Victorian London, the Doctor encounters a rampaging dinosaur strolling along the Thames, and also discovers that a series of spontaneous spontaneous combustion has occurred. Who is the new Doctor and will his friendship with Clara last while they embark on an extremely dangerous venture in the heart of an alien conspiracy? The doctor has changed. The time has come to recognize him [4] .
Story
England. In the midst of Victorian London , a dinosaur appears, from whose mouth the TARDIS flies out and lands on the banks of the Thames. The newly regenerated Doctor and Clara come out of the TARDIS, who are met by Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax. The doctor needs peace, but he cannot resist the investigation when the dinosaur mysteriously burns out. His interest intensifies as soon as it becomes clear that similar mysterious incidents have already occurred here, caused by spontaneous spontaneous combustion .
The doctor and Clara find a message in the newspaper that takes them to a restaurant. The room is full of humanoid robots, and friends fall into the trap. It turns out that the restaurant is actually a broken spaceship that ended up here many years ago. The ship is controlled by clockwork androids, which manage to raise the colossus in the air. The main one, the Half-Face Man, tells the Doctor that their goal is to reach the mysterious Promised Land. The doctor replies that this is just a myth, a phrase chosen by them from the vocabulary of people. The robot claims that the Promised Land exists and they reach it. To launch the ship into the air, they needed people whom they abducted and killed in order to disguise themselves as inhabitants of this planet. The doctor claims that the android replaced its parts so often that there wasn’t a trace of it, and in fact, he didn’t want to live on. The time lord warns Polulikiy that he will be forced to kill him if he doesn’t do it himself in order to protect people. After that, the main android dies, crashed on the Big Ben spire, and all other robots go into inactive mode.
Clara, along with Vastra, Jenny and Strax return to Paternoster Row. Then the Doctor appears in his new suit. The interior of the TARDIS console room has also undergone minor changes. The doctor asks Clara if she wants to continue traveling with him. Clara is confused about this until she receives a phone call from the Eleventh Doctor , who he did before his regeneration, encouraging her to stay.
At the end of the series, the Half-Face man wakes up in the Garden of Eden, where he is greeted by a certain Missy who has knowledge of the Doctor. She tells the android that he has finally reached the Promised Land.
Production
The scenes with Matt Smith in the role of the Eleventh Doctor were filmed on October 5, 2013, on the last day of filming " Doctor 's Time " [5] . They were also written before the rest of Deep Inhalation [6] .

Filming started in Cardiff on January 6, 2014 [8] , while work with the main cast began the next day [9] [10] . On January 13, Mount Stuart Square in the same city was involved in the filming. Also on July 12, a black-and-white wet montage of the episode “Deep Breathe”, which, in addition to the absence of most visual effects, as a whole, was more or less completed [21], leaked . The BBC attributed the leak to the fact that the files were located on a publicly accessible server at its new headquarters in Miami [22] . Steven Moffat, speaking at the London Film and Comic Con, described the leak as “outrageous, sad, and frustrating.” [23] Some fans of the television series urged other members of the fandom not to distribute leaked information [24] .

“Deep breath” received positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised the acting of Peter Kapaldi and Jenna Coleman, the script by Stephen Moffat, as well as the presentation and style of the new Doctor. The appearance of Matt Smith was met ambiguously [54] [55] [56] [57] .
Dan Martin from The Guardian responded approvingly, calling Capaldi's game “intimidating, bold and disturbing” and noting Ben Wheatley’s direction in the tense moments of the episode - “truly scary and outlandish” [58] . The Mirror criticized Matt Smith's cameo as the Eleventh Doctor. Despite this, in the end, she recognized the episode as “impeccable” and stated that Kapaldi “has all the signs of the great Doctor” [57] . The Daily Telegraph's Michael Hogan awarded the episode four out of five stars, also praising Capaldi's play, which “sparkled with a frantic mind and nervous energy,” and a witty script. In addition, the journalist noted that Coleman also issued a “vivid, passionate game”, and considered the tone of the series to be changed, “more calm and thoughtful,” aimed more at “self-knowledge and atonement than running around empty-handed” [47] .
Variety Magazine paid tribute to Moffat’s script by stating that “Deep Inhale” is a “skillful tonal balance that characterizes the best in Doctor Who” and serves as an example of how the look of the series is confidently moving forward and boldly looking into the future, not forgetting the past " [59] . The Los Angeles Times newspaper emphasized that Stephen Moffat did not choose the name by accident, because the current Doctor is “really something new” [60] . The Izvestia article also saw that the title of the episode fits well with the plot itself, and noted how ironically the fact that the current performer of the Doctor’s role is Scot is on the eve of the national referendum on the separation of Scotland from Great Britain [61] .
Be that as it may, not all reviews turned out to be positive. So, Forbes sharply criticized the story as “surprisingly gloomy, non-heroic and bored”, calling the characters Kapaldi and Coleman “fresh” [62] .
Video Release
Deep Breath was released as a separate DVD and Blu-ray edition on September 15, 2014 in the UK [63] , September 9 in the US [64] and September 10 in Australia [65] .
