Lingyi ( Chinese: 临猗 , Pinyin : Línyī ) is a county in the Yuncheng city district of Shanxi Province ( PRC ). The county was formed in 1954 by combining the counties of Lin Jin and Yi Shi; The name of the county was formed from the first characters of the names of the original counties.

History
Under the Western Han Empire, these lands were part of the districts of Isha (猗 氏 县) and Jixian (解 县). Under the North Wei Empire, Wenquan County (温泉 县) was formed. In 487, Jixian County was renamed Beiji (北 解 县), and Ishi was renamed Beishi (北 猗 氏 县). Under the Empire of Western Wei, in 55, Beiishi County was renamed Santsuan (桑 泉 县).
Under the Northern Zhou Empire, Wenquan County was disbanded, Sangquan County was again renamed Ishi, and Beijie County was annexed to Ishi County. Under the Sui Empire, in 596, Santsuan County was re-created. Under the Tang Empire, Wenquan County was restored in 620. In 626, Wenquan County was annexed to Sanquan County. In 753, Sangquan County was renamed Linjin (临晋 县).
The Yuncheng Special Area (运城 专区) was created in 1949, and the county became part of it. In 1954, the Linfen Special Region was merged with the Yuncheng Special Region (运城 专区) into the Jinnan Special Region (晋南 专区); while the districts of Linjin and Ishi were merged into the county of Linyi. In 1958, Linyi County was annexed to Yuncheng County, but was restored in 1960. In 1970, the Jingnan Special District was disbanded, and the Linfen District (临汾 地区) and the Yuncheng District (运城 地区) were formed in its place; the county became part of Yuncheng County. In 2000, by decree of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Yuncheng County was transformed into the Yuncheng City District.
