It was previously believed that this fish is one of the Puntius ticto coloring options (in the natural color of which there is no wide red strip characteristic of the species along the body). This version is widely distributed in aquarium literature. In 2008, the species was described as a separate species [1] . The word padamya in translation from Burmese means ruby.
It occurs on the territory of Myanmar in the Irrawaddy River and its tributary Chinduin . Also found in an artificial pond near the village of Toe Gyi.
The body is elongated, oval, oblate from the sides. The lateral line is incomplete, large scales. Antennae absent. The back is gray-green, the sides are silver with a metallic sheen, the belly is white. The caudal and above the pectoral fins have dark spots, and the front spot is elongated and resembles a vertical strip. Scales form a clear mesh pattern on the body. In the male, a bright wide red stripe runs along the whole body, and the dorsal, anal and ventral fins are covered with black spots. In the female, the strip is almost not visible. The length of the fish is up to 5 cm.
Puberty occurs at the age of 5-6 months. The female lays up to 200 eggs. Spawning occurs in thickets of small-leaved plants. Caviar matures in about a day, and after another 3 days the fry begin to swim.
This is a peaceful flock of fish, so it should be kept in an amount of at least 5 individuals with the same peaceful fish, with the exception of fish with veil fins. You need a fairly spacious (from 50 liters) aquarium with dense vegetation and free space for swimming. Dark soil emphasizes the color of the fish. Fish swim in all layers of water.
Fish are omnivorous; any live, plant or combination feed, as well as dry feed, is suitable.
- Water parameters
- The temperature is 20-24 ° C, but can withstand a temperature drop for a long time to 14-16 ° C,
- Hardness - from 5 to 19 ° dH,
- Acidity - pH 6.5-8.5, can withstand an increase of up to 11 pH.
Spawning should be spacious, since only flock spawning is effective. The ratio of males and females is 1: 2. Before spawning, fish are planted for 1-2 weeks and cooked intensively. Spawning should be planted with small-leaved vegetation. Water should be soft (<8 ° dH), optimum temperature 25–27 ° C. Spawning occurs in the morning and lasts 3-4 hours, after which the fish are planted. Initial food for fry: ciliates and live dust. Later, you can feed crustaceans on nauplii , cyclops, and small daphnia.
Pethia padamya easily crosses with the closely related species Puntius stoliczkanus .
