History
Volleyball appeared in India in 1910 thanks to the popularization activities of the Young Christians Association ( YMCA ). The Volleyball Federation of India was founded in 1951 and in the same year joined the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) , and a year later it became one of the founders of the Asian Volleyball Confederation .
The debut of the women's national team of India in official international competitions took place already at the first world championship , held in 1952 in Moscow . The Indian national team was the only non-European team to take part in the tournament. In all 7 games held, she lost to her rivals with the same score 0: 3.
The next appearance of the Indian women's team in the international arena took place only 11 years later, when the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament was held in Delhi . The hostesses of the competition were unsuccessful at it, having lost all their 4 matches.
Subsequently, the national team of India did not participate in the qualifying tournaments of either the Olympic Games or the world championships for half a century. It was only in 2013 that she tried to qualify for the 2014 World Championship , but, having passed the first qualifying stage due to a victory at the Uzbekistan national team 3-0, in her group of the final round of qualification she was quite predictably unable to compete for two tickets to the World Cup, losing to the national teams China , Kazakhstan and South Korea and defeating only the New Zealand team .
In the Asian volleyball championships, the Indian team is always among the outsiders. Her best achievement in the continental championships is still the 7th place, occupied by Indian volleyball players in 1979 , but at that championship this place was the last. Subsequently, the participation of the national team of India in the Asian championships was irregular and unsuccessful.
All the medal achievements of the Indian women's team are associated only with the South Asian Games , in the volleyball tournaments of which she invariably excels 5 times in a row. It should be noted that due to the low level of development of volleyball in South Asia, the female component of this sport is included in the mentioned subcontinental games irregularly.
In December 2014, Nepal hosted the first South Asian Championship with five teams from the region. The first place was taken by the Indian national team, confidently defeating all of its rivals in the round robin tournament (teams of Nepal , Sri Lanka , the Republic of Maldives and Bangladesh ) [2] .
