Born in 1958 in Rio de Janeiro . He took up swimming at the age of 6, already at the age of 15 he took part in the Brazilian national team in the championship of South America. In 1975, he won three bronze medals of the Pan American Games. In 1976 he took part in the Olympic Games in Montreal , where he took 4th place at 400 and 1,500 m freestyle. At the 1979 Pan American Games, he won 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. In 1980, at the Olympic Games in Moscow, he became a bronze medalist in the relay 4 × 200 m freestyle; He also took part in competitions at distances of 400 m and 1500 m freestyle, and at a distance of 400 m with integrated swimming.
