Biography

He came from a peasant family, received primary education in Rimavsk-Bani and Ordzhany, studied in Dobshin in 1784-1786, and in Sopronsky Lyceum in 1786-1790. Then he worked for some time as a school teacher in Budikovany, then entered the University of Jena, where he studied in 1792-1793 and where he lectured on Czech and Slovak history in the local society of Slovak students. Returning to the Slovak lands, he was initially a school teacher in Lucenec, then a home teacher for the children of the zupan of the Gemera zupa and in Vakov.

In 1803 he became the first professor at the newly opened (thanks to the help of Slovak nationalists, his fellow students at the University of Jena) at the Bratislava Evangelical Lyceum, the Department of Czech Language and Literature, occupied it until 1837, after which he gave way to Ludwig Stur. Palkovic worked actively in the field of Slovak literature and did a lot for its development. Later, he, along with the brothers Nyedloy and Gnevkovsky, belonged to the opponents of the so-called “advanced” party, considering the Czech language of Veleslavin's time to be the ideal of perfection, but from the 1840s he began to recognize the importance of forming the Slovak literary language. He studied various Slavic languages, including Polish and Russian, and conducted active literary and journalistic activities.

Palkovic appeared in literature as a poet, publishing the comedy “Dva buchy a tř i š uchy” (Presburg, 1800; 2nd edition - 1810), collection “Muza ze slovansk ý ch hor” (Vatsova, 1801), “Zn ámost geografická vlasti uherské ”(in verse; Presburg, 1804). Of the prose works of Palkovic, the following are more significant: “Kun št prodlou ž ení ž ivota lidské ho” (translation of Gufeland, 1800), “V ýtah z artìkul ů u sn ě movních i td od po ćá tku stoletì XIX vydaný ch" (Presburg 1808), “V ýtah z artikul ů v sn ě movnich r. 1808 ”(ibid., 1809),“ Böhmissh-deutsch-lateinisches-Wö rterbuch ”(Volume 1, Prague, 1820; Volume 2, Presburg, 1821),“ Abkunft der Magyaren ”(Presburg, 1827) and others. Palkovich published a translation of the Bible “Biblia sacra” (Presburg, 1808), calendars and edited the periodicals “T ýdénuí k” (1812–1818) and “Tatranka” (1832–1847).
