It was created as a result of the construction in the Sukhaya Takhta beam, belonging to the Kevsala river basin, of an earthen dam with a length of 6800 m and a width of 8 m [3] . Volume - 91 million m³ [1] . The reservoir is located within the Stavropol Upland . To the east of the dam of the reservoir is the administrative border of Kalmykia and the Stavropol Territory [3] .
The nearest settlements are the village of Shin-Byadl of the Republic of Kalmykia (located 4.5 km north-west of the reservoir) and the village of Takhta, Stavropol Territory (located 4 km to the south) [4] .
