History
The Urban Sketchers community formed in 2007 as a group on Flickr . [1] Founder of Urban Sketchers, Gabriel (Gaby) Campanario is a Spanish journalist and illustrator who lives in Seattle, USA. [2] As a journalist for The Seattle Times (both in print and in blogs), he not only writes articles, but also posts his stories and sketches there.
As more and more people began to post their drawings on the network, Gaby Campanario created a group to support people who in their drawings from nature depict those things and events in life that are happening right here and now.
In 2008, Campanario created the Urban Sketchers blog . Participation in the blog is possible only by invitation, and the number of participants is limited to 100 "correspondents". So the term Urban Sketchers correspondent appeared.
Campanario invites certain people to the blog as a correspondent, and these people assume the responsibility of regularly posting drawings there. Together with the sketches, the correspondents also publish descriptions and stories of their sketches: where and when the sketch was made, as well as a few words about the drawing. Gradually, the Urban Sketchers blog became popular and collected hundreds, and then thousands of views every day.
In the XX century, the practice of creating sketches became less popular than in the previous 100 years. This is due to the fact that photography has come to the fore and has become more preferable for transmitting images in journalism. Sketching was forgotten and transferred to the studio of classical art schools, becoming a practice known in narrow circles, but forgotten by ordinary people in everyday life.
And then the trends returned to art. In the early 2000s, in coffee houses, parks, on the streets and at airports, it was increasingly possible to see a person painting with a pen or brush in a small notebook. Sketching is experiencing a boom as a practice, and the Urban Sketchers community encourages participation in the movement through communication, workshops, and online networking.
In December 2008, Gabi Campanario established Urban Sketchers as a nonprofit organization (501 (c) (3) tax-exempt). A board of directors was also selected. Objectives of the organization:
- increase the artistic and educational value of drawing from nature
- increase the value of drawing from life as a way of storytelling
- develop the practice of sketching from nature
- to unite people from nature around the world
Activities
The Urban Sketchers community has a manifest [2] :
- We draw from nature, indoors or outdoors, and directly depict what we see.
- Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the history of the places in which we live and in which we travel.
- Our drawings are a “record” of time and place.
- We are truthful in depicting the scenes we see.
- we use any materials and respect each other’s individual styles.
- We support each other and draw together.
- We share our drawings online.
- We show the world, picture by picture.
Sketching
Urban Sketchers is a diverse community of people united by a passion for sketching (sketching). When sketchers gather live or online, they talk a lot and discuss, for example, who uses what materials.
Drawing in public places opens up opportunities for communication. For the most part, they are friendly and pleasant: when the owner of the cafe offers a cup of coffee or when the sketchers are invited to come and make sketches of a closed event, which otherwise would not be possible to attend. For example, when a group of musicians Flon Flon en Musette held a concert on the street, they were drawn by an urban sketcher, who at that moment was nearby. This sketch subsequently hit the cover of the group’s CD album, and the sketcher was invited to a private concert.
In 2011, Gaby Campanario published the book The Art of Urban Sketching , in which he posted the work of the best community members. [1] [3]
Symposia
The Urban Sketchers community organizes urban sketching symposia. These are joyful events where professionals and amateurs meet, and 3 days draw from life, attend master classes, participate in group discussions, attend lectures.
- The first Urban Sketchers International Symposium was held in Portland, Oregon. July 29 - July 31, 2010.
- The Second International Symposium was held in Lisbon, Portugal. July 21-23, 2011. It was visited by 200 participants.
- The Third International Urban Sketchers Symposium was held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. July 12 - 14, 2012 [1]
- The Fourth Urban Sketchers Symposium was in Barcelona. July 11 - 13, 2013 [4]
- The Fifth Urban Sketchers Symposium will be held in Paraty, Brazil. August 27 - 30, 2014. [5]
Communities
Urban Skethers have created many regional communities. Urban Sketchers main blog correspondents, Flickr sketch group administrators, as well as Urban Sketchers enthusiasts create local groups and collect sketchers for joint urban sketching sketchers. For example, dozens of people attend events in Urban Sketchers groups in France, Berlin, Israel, and Chicago, while the Urban Sketchers group in Singapore has hundreds of participants.
Local groups of Urban Sketchers function similarly to the main group. All groups adhere to the Urban Sketchers manifest and follow the requirements of urban sketching, but each group has a regional and cultural identity. Many groups have their own blogs, where correspondents are invited on a geographical basis. Other groups, like Facebook or Flickr, accept everyone.
