Biography
Karl August Gaza was born on August 25, 1800 in Steinbach. He studied in Leipzig, from where he was expelled for participation in a banned student society, then in Erlangen . In 1823 he taught theology in Tübingen and wanted to be rehabilitated, but when his participation in the banned society in Erlangen became clear, he spent ten months in custody.
In 1828 he joined the Masonic organization in Leipzig , in 1829 he was rehabilitated at a local university and a few months later he was invited to head the department of theology at the University of Jena and held this position for more than fifty years; several times was elected dean of the theological faculty and rector of the university. He retired in 1883, having received the baronial title for scientific merit. Gaza tried to reconcile church Christianity with the spirit of the times, and attached significant importance not to the historical role of the Christian church, as the rationalists taught, but to the religious consciousness of the subject.
Karl August Gaze died on January 3, 1890 in the city of Jena.
His main works: “Lehrbuch der evangelischen Dogmatik” (Leipzig, 1870); "Gnosis" (ibid., 1870); “Das Leben Jesu” (latest edition - Leipzig, 1865); "Kirchengeschichte" (Leipzig, 1886); "Franz v. Assisi "(Leipzig, 1856); "Catarina v. Siena "(Leipzig, 1864); "Geschichte Jesu" (Leipzig, 1876). His autobiography before moving to Jena was published under the title "Ideale und Irrthümer" (Leipzig, 1873).
