Mikhail Beer was born into a wealthy Jewish family. He studied history and philosophy in Berlin and Bonn, and to complete his education in 1817–23 he traveled extensively in Italy and France. In 1819, he initiated the creation of the association “Verein für Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden”, the aim of which was to proclaim the struggle to give Jews equal intellectual and cultural rights with the Germans. In the last years of his life he often lived in Paris. He died of neurasthenia, was buried in the Jewish cemetery.
In 1819, he wrote his first tragedy “Klytämnestra”, which was a success on the Berlin stage. His other tragedy, "Der Paria", which has the subject of the position of the Jews, was approved by Goethe. But the best of his work is considered to be the tragedy of “Struense”, which even served as a pretext for diplomatic correspondence, but at the behest of the Bavarian king was delivered in Munich. In Italy, he also wrote a collection of elegies. Beer financially supported several young artists, and bequeathed much of his wealth to the Berlin Academy of Sciences.
