The body length of males is 46–70 cm, females 47–62 cm, tail length for males 55–80 cm, for females 42–80 cm, males weigh 9–13 kg, females weigh 7–9 kg. The fur of these primates is painted black on the back and on the outside of the limbs, the belly is white. Bright red hair on the head is noteworthy. The thumb is reduced, the body is thin.
The species inhabits the Uzungwa Mountains in Tanzania at an altitude of 250 to 2200 meters above sea level. It lives in forests, including low-lying old-growth, secondary and mountain forests.
The group numbers from 7 to 83 animals. Groups are smaller in forests that are significantly degraded as a result of human activities than groups living in large, pristine forests. Animals have a daily lifestyle and are usually found on trees. Their diet consists of old or young leaves, fruits and stems.
This species is threatened by habitat loss due to logging, conversion to agricultural land, collection of firewood, and the production of charcoal and hunting. It is listed in Class A of the African Convention and CITES Appendix II. Currently, only about half of the range of this species is protected within the Uzungwa Mountains National Park.
