Biography
Peter Underwood was born October 10, 1937 in the UK. At the age of 13 (in 1950) he emigrated to Australia [2] . He studied at the school in Launceston ( Tasmania ). He served in the Navy of Australia [3] .
In 1960 he graduated from the University of Tasmania . Since 1963, he has been practicing law at Murdoch, Clarke, Cosgrove and Drake in Hobart [3] . From 1970 to 1983, Underwood was director of the National Heart Foundation [en] [1] .
In 1983, Peter Underwood represented the interests of the Australian federal authorities in court, defending their right to prevent the construction of a dam on the Franklin River in western Tasmania [3] .
In 1984, he was appointed as a judge of the , and on December 2, 2004, he became the chairman ( eng. Chief Justice ) of the Supreme Court of Tasmania [1] .
In 2001, Underwood received the title of Honorary Doctor of Laws [2] [4] . In June 2002, he became an officer of the Order of Australia ( AO ) [5] , and in June 2009 - a partner of the same Order ( AC ) [6] .
On March 3, 2008, it was announced that Peter Underwood would take the place of the Governor of Tasmania . On March 28, he resigned from the post of chairman of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, and on 2 April took the governor's oath [1] .
Peter Underwood died in Hobart on July 7, 2014, shortly after surgery to remove a kidney tumor [2] .
