Biography
Nikolai Smirnov was born on November 12, 1907 in the village of Popadino (now the Antropovsky district of the Kostroma region ). After elementary school, he worked on a collective farm . In July 1941, Smirnov was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War [1] .
By October 1943, Corporal Nikolai Smirnov was a sapper of the 233rd separate combat engineer battalion of the 149th rifle division of the 65th Army of the Central Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . October 15, 1943 Smirnov ferried Soviet fighters and commanders across the Dnieper in the territory of the Loevsky district of the Gomel region of the Belorussian SSR . When Smirnov’s boat was sunk, he found another and continued to carry out the combat mission. During the next flight Smirnov was killed. He was buried in a mass grave in the village of Lopatni, Repki district, Chernihiv region of Ukraine [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 30, 1943, Corporal Nikolai Smirnov was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union for "exemplary performance of command missions of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism." He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin and the Red Star [1] .
In honor of Smirnov named street in Antropovo [1] .
