History
Under the Western Han Empire, Hebei County (河北 县) was created. Under the Western Wei Empire, Anjong County (安 戎 县) was isolated from it. Under the Northern Zhou Empire, in 558, Anjong County was renamed Ruisheng, and in 560, Hebei County was renamed Yunle (永乐 县). In 562, Yongle County was annexed to Ruisheng County. Under the Tang Empire in 618, Yongle County was re-created, but under the Song Empire in 1073 it was disbanded again. Under the Yuan Empire, Ruisheng County was annexed to Pinglu County, but then re-allocated.
The Yuncheng Special Area (运城 专区) was created in 1949, and the county became part of it. In 1954, the Linfen Special Region was merged with the Yuncheng Special Region (运城 专区) into the Jinnan Special Region (晋南 专区). In 1970, the Jingnan Special District was disbanded, and the Linfen District (临汾 地区) and the Yuncheng District (运城 地区) were formed in its place; the county became part of Yuncheng County. In 2000, by decree of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Yuncheng County was transformed into the Yuncheng City District.
