Etymology
The name of the Khara Khora mountain range in translation from the Kabardino-Circassian language means “ Dog and Boar ”. This name comes from the fact that two from the top of the mountain range previously resembled the outlines of the heads of a dog and a wild boar. But due to mountain processes and screes, these outlines are now practically invisible.
Underground Cave
In 2011, after landslide processes at one of the peaks of Khara Khora, local residents discovered an underground cave, going deep into the mountains, with perfectly even walls.
The first inspections of the underground cave were conducted by local cavers. Since the end of 2011, the massif and the underground cave began to be studied by researchers and cavers, who found that an underground mine with straight and polished narrow walls goes 40 meters deep into the mountains, and then goes into a wide underground hall, whose height is 36 meters, and straight the walls are made of large blocks ( megaliths ) and fitted to each other at right angles. In total, the explored dimensions of the cave from the upper part to the lower platform are about 100 meters.
Many rectangular tunnels with a height of 5 to 20 centimeters go from the underground hall into the thickness of the rocks. In the underground hall, a “soaring” megalith was also found, which is attached to the wall with only one edge, which makes it seem to be floating in the air.
At the same time, the representative of the Kabardino-Balkarian geological exploration expedition Vera Davidenko believes that the cave has a natural origin: “The ejection material during accumulation was hot and therefore separate cracks formed during solidification - that is, the whole tuff mass turned out to be broken into blocks. The deepening discovered in the vicinity of the village of Zayukovo is one of such cracks of the gravitational separation, which is characterized by flat contact surfaces ” [1] .
