Biography
He studied law at the University of Bogotá . The lawyer .
In 1851, Gutierrez entered the military academy and demonstrated amazing talent and abilities for military service. In the very first battle during the civil war in Colombia in 1854 against the forces of General José Maria Melo , he saved the life of General Thomas Sipriano de Mosker . After his heroic deed on the battlefield, he was promoted and soon became a general.
In 1859, Gutierrez commanded in the province of Santander the army of General Mosquera, who announced the withdrawal of the Sovereign State from the jurisdiction of the central government. With the support of the governors of several other states, the rebels declared their states as the United States of New Granada. He participated in the war against the troops of President Mariano Ospin Rodriguez . In the battle of “La Concepción” on August 29, 1860, he was wounded, once again, saving the life of Thomas Cipriano de Mosquer.
After the civil war of 1859-1862 , Gutierrez was appointed governor of the province of Boyaca (1861-1862), and later, governor of the province of Cundinamarca (1864-1865).
The revolutionary army of General de Mosquera defeated the Constitutional Army of Colombia. On April 1, 1868, Gutierrez proclaimed himself the Constitutional President of the United States of Colombia . December 21, 1868 in connection with his marriage temporarily left his post. Instead, Colombia was led by Salvador Camacho Roldan .
January 2, 1869 again returned to the presidential duties.
On April 1, 1870, Eustorgio Salgar Moreno transferred the presidency.
