Biography

Born into a Jewish family, from 1796 he studied in Galle, first law, then history. In 1801, he left for Paris for several years, then visited Italy and Greece. In 1805, he adopted Lutheranism in Dresden (it was after this that he adopted the name Bartholdi), in 1809 he participated in the rank of lieutenant of the Vienna militia in a campaign against the French. In 1813 he entered the office of Prince Gardenberg , was part of the allied forces in Paris in 1814, then went to London; took part in the Vienna Congress , in 1815 he was appointed Prussian Consul General in Rome. In 1818, he was called to Aachen to participate in the congress, then he received the position of charge d'affaires at the Tuscan court. In 1825 he retired, died a few months later and was buried in Rome at the Cestius Pyramid .

Bartholdi wrote Der Krieg der tiroler Landleute (Berlin, 1814) and Züge aus dem Leben des Kardinals Hercules Consalvi (Stuttgart, 1825). He is also known as a zealot of art, and he owes his revival to the fresco painting with which the German artists who caused him adorned his house in Rome (Casa Bartholdy). His valuable antiques collection was bought by the Berlin Museum of Art, while the frescoes in his mansion in Rome were donated to Stefano Bardini in 1886–1887 by the Berlin National Gallery .
