History

The order was established on August 17, 1809 in the monastery of St. Augustine in the city of Quito, chairman of the First Council of the Autonomous Government of Quito, Juan Pio Montufar, the second Marquis of Selva Alegre, who came to power in an armed coup. The order was named after St. Lawrence , revered in Spain . On that day, the badges of the order were assigned to all members of the government. After the return of power to the Spaniards, the order was forgotten for more than a hundred years.

On August 10, 1959, President Camilo Pons Enriquez reinstated the order, introducing it into the Ecuadorian award system as an ordinary order, but on June 4, 2001, President Gustavo Noboa Bejarano gave the order the status of the highest state award.
