Biography

He was born on November 7, 1922 in the village of Chernaya Kurya, now in the Mamontovsky district of Altai Krai, into a peasant family. He graduated from 7 classes. He worked at the Lugovaya railway station of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway.

He was drafted into the Red Army in September 1941. In the army since July 1942. He fought with the Nazi invaders on the South-West, Don, 1st Ukrainian , and 2nd Belorussian fronts.

The commander of the anti-tank gun of the 174th fighter-anti-tank artillery regiment, senior sergeant Nikolai Shevelev, particularly distinguished himself for the liberation of the Belostok Region of Belarus, the administrative center of the Podlaskie Voivodeship of Poland , in July 1944.

Covering the crossing of the Neman River near the Belarusian city of Grodno, the soldiers of the anti-tank battery, which included the gun entrusted to senior sergeant Shevelev, held back the stubborn onslaught of four enemy battalions for more than six hours, supported by tanks, assault guns and self-propelled artillery.

Surrounded on three sides by the enemy, the gun crew under the command of Nikolai Shevelev actively participated in repelling six counterattacks, destroyed about one and a half hundred opponents, two armored personnel carriers, knocked out a gun and two machine guns.

As a result, the enemy failed to cut off parts of the Soviet cavalry division that broke through to the city of Lipsk, the Polish city of Augustow.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1944, for the exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command and the courage and heroism shown to it, Senior Sergeant Nikolai Sevelovich Shevelev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal .

After the war, the artillery officer continued his service in the army. In 1945 he graduated from the artillery school, in 1948 - the Higher officer artillery school, in 1959 - the Leningrad higher engineering artillery school. Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1947. Since 1965, Lt. Col. Shevelev N. S. - in stock.

He lived in the capital of Azerbaijan , Baku . He died on February 21, 1980. He was buried in Baku on the Alley of Honor.

He was awarded the Order of Lenin , two orders of the Red Star , and medals.

The name of the Hero is immortalized at the Memorial of Glory in the city of Barnaul . His biographical data are included in the encyclopedia of the Altai Territory .
