Biography

Born in 1922 in the village of Novosyolovka, now Novomoskovsky district, Dnepropetrovsk region . Ukrainian. He graduated from 7 classes. He worked in the consumer goods workshop of the Novomoskovsk Steel Plant.

In the Red Army since July 1941. In the army since October 1941. He participated in the Battle of Kursk, the liberation of Belgorod and Left-Bank Ukraine .

On September 21, 1943, the 959th Rifle Regiment of the 309th Rifle Division of the 40th Army of the Voronezh Front, in which the Red Army soldier Shevchenko served as a mortar gun, reached the Dnieper on the shoulders of the retreating enemy. Despite the fact that the crossing facilities had not yet been delivered so that the enemy could not firmly establish themselves on the west bank, the army command was tasked with crossing the river on the move.

On the night of September 22, 1943, on a repaired punt, Shevchenko secretly crossed the Dnieper and towed two boats to the left bank. At dawn, he was among the first in the forward detachment to cross the river near the village of Balyko-Schuchinka and participated in the seizure of the bridgehead.

In the area of ​​the village at the detachment’s position, the enemy abandoned infantry with the support of eight tanks and armored vehicles. Having repelled the enemy’s attack, the paratroopers launched a counterattack and captured another line of trenches. In this battle, Shevchenko destroyed seventeen and captured two opponents. During the day, as part of a group, he repelled enemy counterattacks, held the captured line. In one of them, the Red Army soldier Shevchenko was mortally wounded and died on the battlefield.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 10, 1944 for courage, bravery and heroism, Red Army soldier Shevchenko Petr Lavrentievich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .

He was awarded the orders of Lenin , World War II degree, medal.

He was buried in the city of Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky, Kiev region . His name was given to a school and a school in the village of Peschanka, Novomoskovsk district, Dnipropetrovsk region .
